About Shih Tzu
A cute Chinese charmer known as the Shih Tzu has a dignified arrogant demeanour and belongs to the toy group with a lifespan of about 10-18 years. Off late Shih Tzu dog breed has become immensely popular in India. They’re too solid for their compact size and are known for their exquisite flowing double coat. This mini breed is known to be affectionate but bold and alert at the same time. These lively charmers are watchdogs by nature and love being around children. The name “Shih Tzu” means ‘Little Lion’, but there’s nothing fierce about this breed. This dog is only a lover, not a hunter. Shih Tzu make great family pets who get along with other animals and even children.

- Shih Tzu’s are more closely related to wolves than many fiercer looking breeds.
- Shih Tzu’s are pampered dogs who led luxuries lives in palaces and enjoying all the comfort a dog could want.

Shih Tzu Nutritional Requirements
Their diet should consist of vitamins, minerals and proteins. Vitamin C and Vitamin E are needed for a healthy immune system. EPA, DHA, and Vitamin A are required to promote the growth of a long coat. Natural and wholesome ingredients such as human grade meat, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats would be beneficial. Natural preservatives such as vitamins blended as mixed tocopherols and rosemary, green tea and spearmint are required too. Probiotics help in good digestive health as well.
Senior Shih Tzu requires additional supplements such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin helps maintain bone and joint health and prevents osteoarthritis. Note:Shih Tzu’s should be given a dry food diet because it is good for their teeth and easier on the stomach which ultimately leads to healthier stools.
Common Diseases/Problems in Shih Tzu
Coprophagy: Coprophagy is a disgusting behaviour found in Shih Tzu; known as the ingestion of faeces. This is common in young, adult and senior Shih Tzu’s.
Heart diseases: 75% of heart diseases are a result of heart valve deterioration. This condition is more commonly found in Adult and Senior Shih Tzu’s.
Dental diseases: Shih Tzu’s are prone to dental diseases due to their crowded teeth. This disease limits the space for adult teeth.
Risk of overheating: Their flat faces and short snouts restrict airflow through the upper respiratory track.
Hay Fever: Adult Shih Tzu’s are prone to this disease. This is an allergy to pollen, dust or mildew.
Average Life Span of a Shih Tzu
