Cocker Spaniel Nutritional Requirements
Cocker Spaniels are medium sized dogs. They can grow to anywhere from 1 foot 3 inches to 1 foot 5 inches. However, they are a breed that is prone to weight gain if they aren’t fed properly according to their activity level.
For less-active Cocker Spaniels, you should look to feeding them around 600 calories per day. Moderately active Cocker Spaniels should get about 740 calories per day. And highly-active Cocker Spaniels should get about 1180 calories per day.
The ingredients should include protein, vitamins , minerals, fats, good carbohydrates, fresh fruits & veggies. The food should also include glucosamine, chondroitin, omega 3 & 6 acids etc.
Common Diseases/Problems in Cocker Spaniel
Ear Infection- Cocker Spaniels are prone to ear infections because they have long, floppy ears. Symptoms include foul smelling, waxy or pus like discharge from the ear.
Eye Infections- Cataracts, cherry eye and progressive retinal atrophy are common eye diseases found in cocker spaniels.
Hip Dysplasia- Improper formation of the joints.
Renal Failure- Kidney failure usually affects older English Cocker Spaniels and it is thought to be an inherited condition.
Symptoms- Changes in thirst and urination, loss of appetite, vomiting, weight loss, and blood in the urine.
